IoT (Internet of Things) Introduction (STEM) $450
In this workshop you will be using an IoT device (e.g. a NodeMCU, EPS32) and a variety of sensors and output transducers. The workshop will include electronics, coding, problem-solving, building (soldering).
You will learn to:
- · monitor and control the IoT device, using the internet;
- · investigate, collect, then display the collected data; and
- · use a variety of online IoT platforms and assess what they have to offer.
On completion of the workshop, you could design a unit of work for Stage 4 (e.g. garden monitor, remote controlled garden system, weather station), a Stage 5 unit of work (Electronics, Applied Electronics) and better support Stage 6 students who might want to investigate using the IoT as part of their Major Design Project.
Note: These IoT devices are programmed using the same software and language as Arduino boards.
Hydraulic arm + Illustrator + Laser Cutter $400
The new Technology Mandatory syllabus contains the Context Focus ‘Engineered Systems’. To introduce students to force and energy a simple hydraulic arm project can be very engaging. Just like engineers, students in teams learn to work together and follow the steps of a design process.
You will learn how to use:
Adobe Illustrator to design your hydraulic arm; laser cutter to cut your design out and assembly instructions with work book and folio activities.
Stage 4 Materials - Textiles $350
The new Technology Mandatory syllabus contains the Context Focus ‘Material Technologies’. This course will focus on meeting the outcomes for a Textiles unit and give a practical, hands on experience for how to creatively engage students. The project is called the ‘Everywear Bag’.
You will learn:
- how to provide opportunities for students to customise their bags through design variation;
- incorporate basic dyeing or printing principles
- relevant manufacturing skills.
Note: All materials for drafting and producing the bag will be supplied in class.
Engineering Mechanisms – Weather Vane Alternative Energy – Wind Turbine Model $450
This workshop has 2 parts to it,
Part 1: STAGE 4 Engineered Systems focusing on Mechanisms – Weather Vane
This workshop is aimed at demonstrating the STEM principles embedded in Stage 4 Technology Mandatory through making a Weather Vane. Building weather vanes is a great way to learn about mechanisms including cams and cranks. You will build a working, wind powered weather vane attached to a humorous animated character. You will be provided with an assessment task and program that can be modified to suit your school context.
Part 2: STAGE 5 Alternative Energy – Wind Turbine Model
This workshop is aimed at demonstrating the STEM principles embedded in Stage 5 Industrial Technology - Engineering through making a Wind turbine. Studying wind turbines is a great way to learn about renewable energy generation. You will build a working wind turbine model and then compare the amount of electricity produced by high and low wind speeds. You will be provided with an assessment task and program that can be modified to suit your school context.
Art Metal Work - Stage 4 and 5 $350
This course is intended for those who have never done silver jewellery making before and are looking to introduce it as a Stage 4 option in Technology Mandatory. You will learn how to make a plain silver ring, a twisted ring and a pendant in sterling silver. This is taught from metalworking principles and can be taught in a metalwork room with basic tools.
Sketchup – Back to Basics $300
Do you think that SketchUp is a ‘toy’ CAD program that no professional would ever touch? Did you know that NASA use SketchUp? So do many architectural and engineering firms. This is freeware. Don’t know how to start using SketchUp? Have you played around with SketchUp but feel that you have missed some basic tips, shortcuts, page set ups?
This course is an introduction to the fundamental concepts and skills of using SketchUp, including various Add On and Extension packages.
Technology Mandatory -‘Choose your own adventure with Adobe Animate’ $300
You will learn about:
Participants will be supplied with a program, student booklet, student work samples and sample assessment tasks that can be modified to suit your school context
- creating items/ drawing on your stage;
- creating buttons/ symbols;
- animating your creations;
- using multiple scenes
- storyboarding and layouts; and
- implementing a functioning user interface.
Interfacing Arduino with controllers, actuators and sensors $400
In this course, you will make three simple projects:
- a simple robotic arm;
- a simple automatic opening garbage bin; and
- a room proximity sensor triggered by distance.
This course teaches the basics of interfacing sensors to the Arduino board and provides some Industrial Technology - Engineering control systems/mechanisms projects as well as a Stage 4 coding project.
Note: Participants will need to supply a laptop.VR and Fusion360 $300
Day One – A full day, mid-level level course on how to use Fusion 360.
You will learn about:
- the different environments and tools; and
- how to create and render objects within the program.
Attendees will walk away from day one with a reversed engineered object they have created in Fusion 360, ready for 3D printing, game design or viewing in Virtual reality.
Day Two - Getting up to speed with Unity and the unity environment "No Coding".
You will learn to:
- import Fusion 360 objects into Unity; and
- setting up Unity for virtual reality.
Technology Mandatory - Digital Technologies
‘Introduction to coding with the BBC Micro:bit’ $450
Throughout this course we will be using a small programmable computer called the Micro:bit. You will use Micro:bit software and the Micro:bit microcontroller board to create your own digital technology projects using simple algorithms.
Course participants will receive a Micro:bit microcontroller plus a student workbook (printed version in colour plus PDF) covering an introduction to the Micro:bit and 6 coding activities, plus 2 extension activities.
1. Turning on and controlling the LED display on the Micro:bit
2. Using buttons to control the Micro:bit LED display
3. Screen rotation exercise
4. Fridge door-light and alarm
5. Rock Paper Scissors Game
6. Traffic light sequencing using the external pins on the Micro:bit
7. Setting up a simple compass using the Micro:bit – extension activity
8. Attaching a servo to the Micro:bit – extension activity
Each activity is structured to introduce new coding skills and/or to consolidate on previously learnt coding skills. By completing the activities in the booklet your students should gain enough experience to complete the design project at the end of this unit.
Participants will receive:
- a printed student work-booklet plus a PDF copy;
- complete electronic files of all activities listed above; and
- a Micro:bit controller including USB cable and battery pack.
Stage 4 Digital Technologies coding using Python. $300
This workshop will introduce attendees to a range of tools available for teachers and students to move from consumers to creators with code. This is aimed at teachers with little or no programming experience and will be focused on integration of the Technology Mandatory Digital Technology Context.
There will also be development opportunities for STEM and Stage 5 integrated projects. Design thinking will be used to engage students while they develop innovative projects. We will be using Python and will be looking at tools which allow students to create many different products by coding.Beginners Website Design and Development $300
You will learn to:
- input text;
- change background colours, headings, images; and
- use video footage.
Become a creator of websites instead of a consumer!Tool Sharpening $350
This course is designed for teachers who need to develop/improve their knowledge and skills to quickly and effectively keep the tools in their rooms sharp. Having sharp tools improves safety and helps engage students with their work.
You will learn how to sharpen:
- chisels and plane blades;
- wood turning tools;
- cabinet scrapers;
- drill bits, including specialty bits;
- metal turning tools;
- punches; and
- router bits.
Each participant will develop a high level of skill in grinding and sharpening.
There will also a session on developing jigs & tooling for making successful projects.
Note: Each person will need to bring blunt tools with them for the course – (planes, chisels, wood turning tools, drill bits, metal turning tools and anything else that you need to learn to sharpen).
For this workshop you will need to bring the following PPE:
● safety glasses;
● ear muffs;
● fully enclosed leather shoes with a sturdy sole;
● appropriate workshop clothing; and
● if you have long hair - it must be tied back
Digital Control Technologies - an introduction to IoT/M2M $600 (includes class set of boards and bits to implement)
This workshop is an easy introduction to IOT/M2M Control Technologies. It addresses some Outcomes from the Digital Technologies, Engineered Systems and Materials Technologies Contexts of the new Technology Mandatory syllabus while learning to code a microprocessor. The course will introduce concepts of coding with real world devices, an introduction to microprocessors via a locally developed board with built in I/O, motor driver, multiple LEDs, LDR, buzzer output.
This is a low-cost entry appropriate to schools using free software for simulation and experimentation.
Course costs include 11 ‘Techstarter’ boards for use in the classroom. Additional sets are available for purchase.
Participants will engage in discussion regarding problem/project based learning, its application in the classroom and how to develop appropriate assessment methodologies.
Targeted concepts are Project Based Learning, Design Thinking, Computational and Algorithmic thinking and Integrated Learning.etextiles $400
This is a STEM course designed to help the absolute beginner get going with e-Textiles. Teachers will be introduced to the basic concepts of electronics and how to apply them to textile based design projects (e-Textiles).
You will learn about:
- introductory electronics theory;
- identification of simple components;
- developing circuits using ICTs; and
- applying that knowledge to simple skill development projects.
Participants will engage in discussion regarding problem based learning, its application in the classroom and how to develop appropriate assessment methodologies.Note: The workshop will include a kit of components that contains enough components to enable further experimentation after the course.
